Footer

The footer provides copyright information, licensing details, and links to allow users to quickly navigate to other pages of a website. At Sainsbury’s, we use a web header for products hosted on the web and a native header for products hosted on iOS and Android.

The footer helps users who reach the bottom of the page without finding what they want.

When using a footer:

  • Always position it at the bottom of the page
  • Provide links to the website’s help sections
  • Don’t overwhelm users with too many links

Standard footer

Keep in mind that a screen reader will read the footer from left to right.

When the user has selected a tab, the screen reader will read the footer out as:

  • “Selected (Name of tab) tab 1 of 5”

Otherwise, if the user is tapping through items in the footer, the screen reader will read the footer out as:

  • “(Name of tab) tab 2 of 5”

Copy guidelines

Good text makes it clear what content is being linked to.

If using ‘Find out more’ or ‘Learn more’, use supplementary link text to indicate where the link navigates to for screen reader users.
